The establishment of Common Secured Landfill Facility became necessary to facilitate disposal of solid waste being generated by industrial units in an environmentally safe manner. This was also necessary to fulfill the requirement of the provisions of Hazardous Waste (Management and Handling) Rules 1989 framed under Environment (Protection) Act 1986. Keeping these requirements in mind the Green Environment Services Co-operative Society Limited (GESCSL) initially formed a separate body named Gujarat Industrial Waste Management Company Limited (GIWMCL) in 1996 to look after this responsibility. Later in 1998 this body was merged with GESCSL for better and smooth functioning in respect of administration of all types of common infrastructure for the protection of environmental quality in this area.

The solid wastes generated by the industrial units in Vatva industrial estate mainly consist of Gypsum, Iron Sludge, ETP Sludge, Incinerator Ash, Reject / Off specification Materials etc. Proper interim storage facilities were to be provided by individual industrial units in its premises for the storage of solid waste for a brief period until it is picked up and transported to SLF. The total quantity of solid waste generated in the estate was estimated to be 70000 MT.

Initially SLF No. 1 & SLF No. 2 were constructed. Later these two sites were expanded and after full capacity utilization were capped and green vegetal layer was developed.

We have set up a full flagged Analytical Laboratory equipped with necessary analytical instruments and facilities. Qualified and trained personnel look after the operation of SLF and laboratory.

The records of all of the above results are maintained and are made available to the concerned authorities whenever required.
